I’m a Republican and I Hope Mitch McConnell gets Voted out in 2020.

As a young and moderate Republican with dreams of being in congress one day- Mitch is one of the most frustrating and disloyal politicians I have ever had the displeasure of seeing. Let me explain.

Here are three examples in which Mitch failed me as a republican and failed us all as Americans.

Failure to Pass Bi-partisan Election Security

McConnell has been dubbed “Moscow Mitch” for refusing to bring up bipartisan legislation that had passed the House to strengthen America’s elections against manipulation from foreign governments such as Russia. Russia is now proven to have intervened in the 2016 elections in favor of Donald Trump. Intelligence agencies say there is no doubt that Russia will try to interfere in the 2020 elections and is already preparing to do so. In fact, the interference is already happening. Our defenses are significantly and intentionally weakened thanks to Mitch.

Blocking Merrick Garland from SCOUTUS

To recap, Garland was nominated to fill the 2016 vacancy on the Supreme Court created by the death that February of Justice Antonin Scalia, a conservative icon. President Barack Obama quickly named Merrick Garland to fill the seat. Garland had long been considered a prime prospect for the high court, serving as chief judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit — a frequent source of justices that is sometimes called the “little Supreme Court.” Garland maintained bi-partisan support and an impeccable record, but was still denied.

Mitch argued that since the appointment was near an election year- the American people should have a say in the appointment. Flimsy logic aside- the President has the power to appoint judges, and the people decided in 2012 to vote Obama in. Beside, Garland was/is respected by people on both sides of the aisle.

Americans from both sides should despise Mitch’s brand of dirty politics. I do even as a Republican. Mitch knew exactly what he was doing. Because of this- Neil Gorsuch was appointed by Trump to fill Scalia’s position. Soon, Brett Kavanaugh would also be appointed to the court. I approve very highly of Justice Gorsuch, but NOT Kavanaugh. Today, both Gorsuch and Garland should be sitting on the court. I far would have preferred it this way.

Failure to Uphold His Oath of Office During Trump’s impeachment.

When commenting on the impending impeachment trial, McConnell so characteristically stated, “There will be no difference between the president’s position and our position as to how to handle this”. That’s an upfront declaration that he has no intention of being impartial, even though all senators must swear ahead of an impeachment trial to “do impartial justice according to the Constitution and laws. So help me God.”

McConnell can honor his oath or McConnell can coordinate with the White house. He can’t do both. He’s made his choice- and it’s only the tip of the iceberg of his failure to serve the country.

McConnell’s Damage to the GOP:

Mitch has demonstrated that he will do whatever it takes to “win” in the short term- even if it means breaking his oaths. It may have landed the GOP a seat on SCOTUS and kept Trump as president for 9 months. These are short term gains. Mitch will hurt the GOP in the long term as people wise up to his un-American schemes.

Make no mistake, Mitch is turning off an entire generation to the GOP. Young people want no part of his dirty politics. He will cause us the GOP to lose in the long term.

I am 23. I’m a moderate Republican. I’ve seen Mitch do everything wrong. When I’m in DC- I always promise to put my country over my party. The way it should be. If there is any good that comes from Mitch’s time in congress, it is this: he is teaching me and my generation everything that we shouldn’t be as leaders. We are learning, and my generation of GOP will be much better than him.

Better Americans and better people.
